King/Hayes Conservation Easement

Conservation Easement

December 29, 2010

A working forest conservation easement on the 80 acre King Hayes property ensures that the property will remain undeveloped while producing forest products using best management practices. The conservation easement also protects two rare natural communities as defined by the Maine Natural Areas Program, including a small pitch pine scrub oak barren and a ridge top red pine stand associated with Mt. Mani (“the Jewel”). Pitch Pine scrub oak barrens commonly support several rare butterfly and moth species and two rare plant species.

The King Hayes property together with adjacent, undeveloped lands in the watershed of the Burnt Meadow Mountains provides a significant block of unbroken habitat which promotes greater species diversity.
