Papanek Conservation Easement

Conservation Easement

October 7, 2008

The 50 acre Papanek conservation easement in Brownfield, Maine protects over 4,000 feet of natural, undeveloped shoreland and wetlands in the Upper Saco River floodplain, an area of statewide ecological significance. The Silver Maple Floodplain Forest portion of the property, a state rare natural community, is characterized by a predominance of spectacularly large silver maple with a lush herbaceous layer dominated by ferns.

According to the Maine Natural Areas Program, the Papanek property provides important habitat for native birds including spotted sandpiper, belted kingfisher, eastern kingbird, American black duck, wood duck, as well as nesting sites for osprey and a wintering area for bald eagle. Globally rare dragonflies also inhabit this portion of the Saco River corridor, including pygmy snaketail, ebony boghaunter, ringed boghaunter and Rapids Clubtail.
