Leita Monroe Lucas Snowshoe & Bonfire
In 2012, landowner Barry Lucas donated 64 acres near the corner of Hurricane Mountain Road and Green Hill Road on the Conway/Chatham border to the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust (USVLT). Since then, USVLT has worked to build and maintain a wildlife habitat and land stewardship plan that reflects and respects both the beauty and history of this property.
Join us on Sunday February 5th, as part of Great Maine Outdoor Weekend, to explore the Leita Monroe Lucas property on snowshoes and enjoy a bonfire complete with s’mores. USVLT staff will update the community on: work to date, plans for the future, and what we know about the history of this property. There will be a brief walk to the historic cabin site where painter Thomas Wilmer Dewing was once a frequent visitor. This will be a great way to get outside and enjoy some fresh air before the onslaught of Superbowl commercials occurs!
We’ll gather at 11:45am at the State of Maine Visitor’s Center on Route 302 in Fryeburg (just over the state line from Conway, NH). From there, we’ll carpool to the site as parking is currently very limited (we have plans for a small parking area for the new trails!). Dress warm, bring snowshoes (and/or micro spikes depending on that week’s snowfall), and your own hot chocolate. See you “on the land”.
