Hussey Farmland Easement

Conservation Easement

March 27, 2008

Overview

The Upper Saco Valley Land Trust, in partnership with the USDA Farm and Ranchland Protection Program (FRPP), purchased a conservation easement on 75 acres of important farmlands owned by Justin and Julie Hussey in 2008.

The purpose of the FRPP is to provide matching funds for the purchase of conservation easements on private lands with high agricultural value. The farmlands in the floodplain of the Upper Saco River, including the Hussey property, have some of the best agricultural soils in New Hampshire. In addition to protecting historically significant farmland, an easement on the Hussey property will help protect the scenic values of the West Side Road, designated as a scenic road by the Town of Conway, as well as the water quality of the Saco River watershed.

The Justin and Julie Hussey conservation easement is the Land Trust’s second West Side Road Farmland Protection Project. We successfully closed on the adjacent 62 acre Kennett family conservation easement in September 2006. We envision the Kennett and Hussey easements as the first of several such projects protecting important, productive farmland along the West Side Road in Conway.

“We share the same beliefs and vision as the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust. We are honored to contribute to the lasting beauty and conservation of the Mount Washington Valley.”
