Kennett Farmland Easement

Conservation Easement

September 5, 2006

In partnership with the USDA Farm and Ranchland Protection Program (FRPP), the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust protected 61.94 acres of important farmlands owned by the Frank & Carol Kennett family in 2006.

The purpose of the FRPP is to provide matching funds for the purchase of conservation easements on private lands with high agricultural value. The farmlands in the floodplain of the Upper Saco River, including the Kennett property, have some of the best agricultural soils in the state. In addition to protecting historically significant farmland, a an easement on the Kennett property will help protect the scenic values of the West Side Road, designated as a scenic road by the Town of Conway, as well as the water quality of the Saco River watershed.

Part of the Land Trust’s West Side Road Farmland Protection Project, this is a larger effort to protect agricultural land in the upper Saco River valley. “Our family has very deep feelings about this neighborhood. We’re really excited to be helping make the first step to save agricultural land here in the valley,” said Bruce Kennett, “and we hope other people will see this effort and want to do the same.”
