History Walk - Impressions of Painters

History Walk - Impressions of Painters

Located on the Conway/Chatham border, the Leita Monroe Lucas Preserve was donated to USVLT in 2012 by Barrett Lucas in honor of his wife, the late Leita Monroe Lucas. This 62-acre property was once the home site of American Impressionist painters Thomas Wilmer Dewing & Maria Oakey Dewing. We will be joined by Jeanne Eastman and Emily Fernald of the Chatham Historical Society to discover the history surrounding the preserve and discover remnants of old homesteads.

We will meet at the Leita Monroe Lucas Preserve on Green Hill Road in Conway, just south of the Chatham town line at 9AM and proceed on the loop trail. This is an intermediate level hike. There will be an opportunity for individuals unable to complete the 1.1-mile loop trail to meet us at the Dewing Cottage Site. More details will be available regarding that option the morning of the hike. Please come dressed appropriately, and bring bug spray.

The Trekking through Time Series is a collaboration between land trusts and historical societies in the greater Mount Washington Valley and Western Maine, designed to bring history to life through interpretive hikes on conservation land.
